The world of people management is changing

In 2022, the CIPD found that poor mental health was the most common cause of long-term sickness absence in UK workplaces, while Mind’s 2020/21 Workplace Wellbeing Index found that 14% of employees rated their current mental health as poor or very poor.

Recruitment struggles persist - over half of employers have hard-to-fill vacancies and a third anticipate significant problems in filling roles. Skill shortage vacancies are a particular problem and currently outnumber labour shortages.

Expected pay awards have risen to 5% overall, the highest level since we started tracking in 2012. But despite this, pay awards are struggling to keep up with inflation.

CIPD found that while half (49%) of surveyed organisations used annual appraisals, most of these leaders (55%) did not consider them ‘effective’

Research from 2022 shows that 96% of people want to work for employers with good employment practices. They also want to feel valued at work.

In June 2022, 3,300 staff at 70 UK companies embarked on the world’s biggest four-day week trial. The sheer variety of participating companies (for example, financial firms, a brewery, and a fish and chip shop) hints at a mainstream future. Likewise, the fact that 86% of firms claimed, when surveyed halfway through, they’d commit to the policy long term.
